Congratulations to Gavin Phillips, grade 5, and author of The Little Blue Penguins of North Sydney Harbour. This is Gavin’s second book about penguins and the conservation efforts to save them. Gavin was mentored this year by some incredible folks from Australia: his team included Environmental Scientists Lisa O’Neill, and a graduate student on a research semester from Wofford College in South Carolina, Paul Tanner Walkup. The mentors collaborated with Gavin through Google docs and email to construct the storyline and drama for his children’s book about these amazing tiny penguins. His mother, Jennifer, created the sketches that Gavin edited in Photoshop. The book was uploaded to Lulu, a print on demand publisher.
